The short answer

If your AC stops cooling on a hot day, first make sure everyone is safe: move people and pets to the coolest room, close blinds, run fans and drink water. Call for repair and say if anyone at home is elderly, very young, pregnant or has a health condition. If the house keeps heating up, go somewhere cooler, such as a friend's home or a city cooling center. If anyone shows signs of heat stroke, call 911.

Why heat inside the house is dangerous

Indio's average July high in the 1991 to 2020 climate normals is close to 106 degrees, and the average July low is about 82. Without air conditioning, a house absorbs heat all afternoon and cannot shed it at night. Indoor temperatures can climb into the 90s and beyond, and the body struggles to cool itself when the air around it is that warm.

Some people are at much higher risk. Older adults, infants and young children, pregnant people, people with heart, lung or kidney disease, and people taking certain medicines can develop heat illness faster. In Indio's 55-plus communities such as Sun City Shadow Hills, that makes a summer AC failure a priority call.

Signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke

Heat exhaustion can include heavy sweating, cold, pale and clammy skin, a fast but weak pulse, nausea, muscle cramps, tiredness, dizziness, headache and fainting. Move the person to a cooler place, loosen clothing, apply cool wet cloths and give sips of water. Get medical help if symptoms get worse or last longer than an hour.

Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Signs include a very high body temperature, hot red skin that may be dry or damp, a fast strong pulse, headache, confusion and losing consciousness. Call 911 right away and cool the person with whatever you have while you wait. Do not give fluids to someone who is confused or unconscious.

Your first-hour checklist

  • Check the thermostat setting and reset a tripped AC breaker once only.
  • Turn the system off if you smell burning or the breaker trips again.
  • Close blinds, run fans and move everyone to the coolest room.
  • Drink water regularly and avoid using the oven or stove.
  • Call for repair and say who is at home and how hot it is inside.

Cooling centers in Indio

During heat waves, the City of Indio has opened free cooling centers. In June 2025, for example, the city listed the Indio Senior Center at 45700 Aladdin Street, open weekday daytime hours, and the Coachella Valley Rescue Mission at 84110 Manila Street, open daily. Locations and hours change, so check the city's announcements during a heat wave.

Libraries, malls and other air-conditioned public places can also give relief for a few hours. The goal is to keep vulnerable people out of a hot house until cooling is restored.

Plan before summer arrives

Write down your AC system's brand, model and age, keep a spare filter, and know where your breaker panel is. Save the number for help and the address of the nearest cooling center. Set up a check-in with a neighbor or relative for heat waves, especially if you live alone.

Pets and heat

Dogs and cats overheat quickly in a hot house. Give them water and the coolest room, keep them indoors, and never leave them in a car or garage. If they pant heavily, drool or seem weak, call a veterinarian.

After the repair

Once cooling is back, keep an eye on everyone who was affected by the heat for the rest of the day. Heat illness can show up hours later, especially in older adults. Drink plenty of water, rest, and seek medical help if anyone feels unwell. Then ask the technician what failed and whether anything else looks worn, so the same breakdown does not repeat next week.

Questions people in Indio ask

How hot is too hot inside?

There is no single number for everyone, but rising indoor temperatures in the mid-80s and above are a warning sign, especially for vulnerable people. Act early rather than waiting.

Are fans enough when it is very hot?

Fans help move air, but at very high temperatures they cannot prevent heat illness on their own. Cooling the body with water and getting to a cooler place matter more.

Where can I find Indio's current cooling centers?

Check the City of Indio's website and social media during heat waves; locations and hours change.
